Babystep #7 Explained: Take It Slow

By Cindy | July 26, 2007

By taking it slow, any mom can succeed in being healthy and fit. Conquer the challenges of time, motivation, expectations, and results with baby steps. Here are a few tips to remember why it is important to take it slow:

  • INJURY: The body speaks. If you feel pain, hurt or discomfort, your body lets you know. Respond in the same manner you would toward your crying child. Do not dismiss the little aches. If you do, they will grow into larger problems and delays. Take a day or two off. For major pains, call the doctor. Injury will quickly make any progress seem obsolete. Don’t let the pain result in months of recovery.
  • BODY CHANGES: The body changes slowly over time. Dissolving fat from many years of comfort and building muscle tissue take time. Check your body measurements every four or six weeks. Let your body take time to show change in inches. For those weight measurements, you know what’s best for you. If daily checks of the scale are too much, look to weekly or even monthly weigh-ins.
  • HABITS: There is a debate about how long one needs to be doing something to make it a habit. Anywhere from 30 days to 6 weeks seems to be the consensus. Start building on one simple habit at a time. Gradual changes make way for life altering paths. Form the building blocks toward a healthy lifestyle over time. Do not try to change everything at once. Good intentions will not lead to changed habits.
  • INCREMENTAL CHANGE: Build on workouts or movements. Start small and create reasonable expectations for change. Adding extra movement into your day does not have to equate into a full blown one hour regimented exercise routine.

This part of the journey is similar to rolling hills. Building up the stamina to face the hills is what will make you stronger. Certain aspects of the journey are more difficult than others. With the continued effort to place one foot in front of the other, you will overcome the hills and be a stronger person on the other side. Reach the top and look for more challenges to lead to greater heights. I look forward to seeing you on the other side.
