Book Review: Body Clutter: Love Your Body, Love Yourself by Marla Cilley and Leanne Ely

By Cindy | December 13, 2007

Body Clutter: Love Your Body, Love Yourself is humble. Two women share their challenge with weight in a matter-of-fact and intimate way. By utilizing the unique Flylady system, they transform the weight loss process into manageable, self-reflective BabySteps. Marla Cilley says, “We wrote this book to help you find peace. Peace with food, movement, and most of all, the attitude that has created your Body Clutter.” (p. xxiv) Through their own life experiences, Marla Cilley and Leanne Ely demonstrate that the path to removing weight is not only one of outside forces, but an essential understanding of our inner voices. Leanne states, “It isn’t just about overeating or not getting enough exercise. The reasons can vary, but getting to the heart of the matter and finding out why the Body Clutter is there in the first place can be the first step toward liberation” (p. xxvi). With each chapter, Marla and Leanne speak to us from the heart, one on one, and provide tools to discover that “[o]ne of the neatest things about the journey in life is the ability to redefine oneself. Self-assessment can be painful at times, but all growing pains lead to growth, which is the important thing” (p. xxvii).

Targeted Audience
Body Clutter is clearly designed for the Flylady audience. I am a Flybaby myself. I’ve embraced the Flylady calendar. I love the little stickers. I still don’t use the Pamper Myself Stickers enough. The Holiday Control Journal has helped me tremendously over the last few years in preparing family meals and travel. The Flylady advice that I’ve incorporated into my life over the last 3 years has improved my housecleaning skills and attitude toward myself. I understand the acronyms and definitions used throughout Body Clutter which Flylady uses regularly in her emails, on her website and in her book, Sink Reflections(another great book). A glossary is conveniently located at the beginning of the book for non-flylady readers. After a few references to the glossary, any reader can quickly understand terms such as God Breezes, Purple Puddles, CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome), FLY (Finally Loving Yourself) and SHE (Side Tracked Home Executive).

Book Organization
Body Clutter is for any woman that berates herself with her inner voices because she feels that she didn’t live up to everyones’ standards around her! Simply organized, it progresses through the mental hurdles that plague many women. The first five chapters are devoted to the mental challenges of food and weight. Chapters 6 through 10 are devoted to action. With Chapters 11-14 returning to the mental process of overcoming challenges and facing the newfound freedoms of “loving ourselves.”

The Body Control Journal
At the end of each chapter, Marla and Leanne provide clear, thought provoking questions to write in your Body Control journal. Once they’ve poured their hearts out to us, they provide the opportunity for us to truly stop and think about what our inner voices, actions and circumstances are in relation to food and exercise. Their website, FlyLady has tools to help you fill in your Body Control Journal.

Body Clutter: Love Your Body, Love Yourself is a book of inspiration. The message clearly focuses on You, the reader. How are you affected by food? What are your excuses and challenges? Why do you struggle with treating yourself right? You are not going to find a quick and easy solution here. This is a book to mentally challenge how you view yourself. In understanding and loving yourself, you will be able to affect change in your life. I highly recommend Body Clutter: Love Your Body, Love Yourself to gain a perspective of yourself and realize how important you are to your success in achieving a healthy, fit lifestyle.

Good review Cindy. I’ve only flirted with Flylady concepts myself although I do think they are a great idea. And a book that applies them to weight loss and body management has got to be a good thing i would think.

Hi Karen. You’re absolutely correct. The concepts behind the housecleaning aspect of Flylady fit perfectly into weight loss. I love the Holiday Crisis Cleaning concepts shared by Flylady. It’s my way of living which is why I am very much a flybaby still.
