Build Your Body While Watching LOST

By Cindy | March 12, 2008

Watching TV does not have to equal snack attacks and crashing for the day. Are you sitting in front of the television thinking, “I’m just a Couch Potato?” Let’s change those negative thoughts, right now. Working out during commercials is a good tip, but this one is even better: We’re gonna workout during the span of the whole show.

I am raising the bar.

I have a new challenge for you.

Grab your workout shoes, comfortable workout clothes and water.

Here we go!

I love LOST. I like the complexity of the storyline and the characters. Not wanting to give up my favorite TV shows to workout, the evening turned into a great opportunity to mix up workouts while the little ones dozed off upstairs. My brain candy television time has turned into body improvement sessions.

This week during LOST, let’s focus on character recognition. An exercise is attached to each character. Every time the character pops up on the screen, complete a set of 10 exercises.

The Character Exercises

jack.jpgJack: A Jack spotting? Start your jumping jacks. Yep, it’s obvious. it’s easy. At least I know you’ll not forget this one. Come on, when is the last time you did a jumping jack. No excuses, girl. You can still focus on his good looks and what he’s saying.

kate.jpgKate: Kicks. Forward, to the side, backwards. Put a little umpf into that strong kick. Kate’s a strong willed girl. Let out the anger. Use the force. Mix up those kicks. Variety is key to staying engaged.

sawyer.jpgSawyer: No drooling or mindless staring. I know your heart rate is already racing, so speed run in place. Let’s make that heart rate racing worth the effort for your bod! Let that bad boy be your motivation.

john.jpgJohn: Tricep Dips on the end of your couch. The cushions are great for those stabilizing muscles that support triceps. These are difficult. Since we have no idea what John is up, you’ll see the connection. Your couch can be an amazingly deceptive tool for fitness!

sayid.jpgSayid: Speed rope jumping is the only exercise that qualifies for Sayid’s intense focus and character. Pretend you have a jump rope and tackle this exercise with the zeal of a warrior or boxer!

hurley.jpgHurley: Trunk Twists from side to side. Keep your hips pointed toward the television and twist your upper body from left to right. Sweet and simple. Pull your abs in toward your spine and keep them tensed.

claire.jpgClaire and Aaron: Arm curls. As a mother, we know how often we are picking up baby. Grab a bag of potatoes if your little ones are already in bed. Couch potatoes, no more! Lifting a 3 to 10 pound bag–Now that’s a real workout.

The Rest of the Characters: Do you have an idea for a character move? Please share, it would be awesome to have a full body workout with every character attached to an exercise move!

michael.jpg

Oh, and if Michael pops up on the screen, then everyone has to do 10 extra star jumps (start squatting low with fingers touching the ground, jump up and stretch out hands and legs in star form, and return to low squat) just because it’s what we predicted!

Let me know how the workout goes tomorrow and if you’d like a new workout for next week. For the non-LOST Fans, apply the character exercises to your favorite show’s characters. There’s no reason for you to be missing out on a good solid TV Workout.

Stay tuned for my Dancing with the Stars TV Workout to be released Sunday night for the Monday, March 17th Show Premiere!

I think that is a super cool idea! I probably won’t do it. I plan on already having my workout in and just relaxing to watch the show. I will keep it in mind when I sit down to watch other shows. I just feel like Lost really needs all of my minds attention. It is very complex! Thanks for the great idea!

That’s a great idea! I got a good chuckle out of it.

My wife and I don’t actually watch live television as being too much of a waste of time, but we do use netflix to watch television shows w/o commercials and will sometimes watch current shows from the websites (I hook her laptop up to the television.)

I don’t really worry about my time working out, but most of the time when she is watching something she walks on the treadmill in the basement and gets her exercise in that way.

I’m not a Lost fan, but I love the idea. (reminds me of my college days and we played drinking games for each character. Ahhh…to be young again!)

Super idea! I watch Celebrity Apprentice on Thursday’s and will have to think of a few things to do each week (they are down to the final 5).

This is a very clever idea. I love it and have reviewed and launched it into stumble land as I think others will enjoy this clever idea too. I won’t do this because I lift weights and rock climb and get plenty of exercise but I think others will really love this!

This is AMAZING! But I’m literally at the edge of my seat waiting for the DWTS workout… :)

What a creative workout! You’ve got some great ideas!
Now, I’ll be honest, I don’t watch LOST (sorry, folk)! But I still think the exercises are fun. :)

I am not a couch potato… but I am a computer chair eclair!

I don’t watch network TV, tho. Sometimes I’ll watch something on the sci fi channel, but I’ve never been much of a television watcher… my dad used to watch tv to the exclusion of paying attention to his family, and I resented it.

This would be a fun idea to use when watching cartoons with your kids. Every time Spongebob laugh, let’s jump up and down…or whatever. If you do this as a family, it could get really silly and fun.

Two of my favorite things – Lost and working out – finding their way to each other! I love it!

I think Walt deserves an exercise. Since he’s not on the show much anymore, I suggest burpees as a great whole-body exercise.

Fantastic idea! I think this could work so great for so many other shows we watch. It’s perfect for those who would otherwise not be able to make time for exercise..like…ahem…me!!

I came across your site on Thursday night before we watched lost! I was reading the workout to my husband, I thought it was funny that you had something about Michael on here! When he actually came on the screen we flipped out!

It’s great to see all these wonderful responses. How did the exercises go. It was pretty neat and not overly stressful!

Suzanne, I think I got lucky. I didn’t realize what type of following LOST had and there are some people that analyze and make some convincing arguments. I would have been completely surprised had I not been looking for Lost information for the episode!

I was working on my own Lost-based workout and found your version. Here are some others I thought of: Kate: running versus kicks. Jin – Karate style kicks or boxing. Ben – Low back exercises Desmond – Rowing. Sun – Plie squats for her Glass Ballerina episode. Enjoy!!!

That’s a totally great idea! I guess if two characters are on at the same time you can just do the exercise for whomever came on first? That sounds about right. I’m definitely going to try this when I start watching season two on DVD this week.
