Do You Want to Weigh Less or Take Up Less Space? An Interview with Holly Rigsby

By Cindy | February 20, 2008

holly-rigsby I am really excited to welcome Holly Rigsby, The Fit Yummy Mummy, for a personal and insightful interview. Holly Rigsby is mom to six year old Tyler. She decided that the busy life of Mom required a change. She studied nutrition and exercise. Her life mission is to help women realize their ability to lose weight efficiently and in a healthy manner. Holly, a teacher to fourth graders in her life prior to being mom, is now our teacher and example to follow. Let’s go to class and see what she has to teach us today!

Could you describe the moment and feelings that changed your habits to lead a healthy, fit lifestyle?

Taking care of myself was not initially a priority for me – I had a baby, a husband and a household to care for. Sure I knew I had to eventually do something to lose the baby weight, but never felt the pressure to do so – for I had just had a baby and believed weight loss would eventually come with time – the whole 9 months on 9 months off theory. Sure I lost some baby weight by staying active and doing a lot of walking.

The greatest results actually happened at a point after my first marriage came to an end as I chose to become a single mom. I moved my son and myself to a new city and had some big choices to make. I was at the point in my life where I was starting new and had a lot of bad lifestyle habits that had carried over. What I had been doing was no longer working and I wanted to feel secure and confident with my body…especially knowing I was entering the dating scene again. I wanted to feel good about my body. It didn’t matter that I had lost some weight – I just felt soft and flabby and not so attractive. Enter: Resistance Training. This is the method that began to reshape my body – for once I didn’t care what the scale said, I was wearing smaller jeans and looking great. Plus, once I coupled it with supportive nutrition, my results came even faster. I went further than reclaiming my pre-baby body, I gained a whole new me!

As a mom, what has been the most challenging part of your fitness journey?

Time!! It is extremely easy to get caught up in the endless duties that fill our plate day in and day out. There will always be someone or something that needs us and our time. Putting our needs last initially seems the logical thing to do. Holding on to the idea, “I’ll start when…” or “I’ll have more time when…” is just an excuse. Fact is, there will never be more time. There will always be something else. Instead it is about managing the time we do have and setting priorities.

It’s difficult to stay on the fitness path. Do you recall a moment when you just wanted to give up? How do you overcome a bad day?

In the past, sure. There were several times when I did give up. Results just were not seen or it was way too difficult to achieve or maintain results, but looking back I can see I did not make the best choices. This time around it is completely different. What I have achieved is a true lifestyle change – a change that has happened from the inside and out. I am at a completely different point in my life and have no desire to fall back into old habits. Sure bad days happen. I take comfort in knowing each day is a chance to get back on track – and doing so with the wisdom gleaned from a not so great day.

Do you have a workout motto? Why did you choose it?

Not so much a motto – but I like to share this thought just before a workout …..This will be your New Favorite Workout – with a little pep and enthusiasm in my voice. The right mindset really does wonders.

What’s your favorite exercise? How about your least favorite exercise?

I have many favorites but really enjoy squats, reverse lunges and Romanian deadlifts.
Least favorite would be the isolation exercises that seem to be glorified in the latest fitness magazines.

What playtime activity with your son would also qualify as a workout?

Playing a game of T-ball or baseball in the backyard. Tyler sure can hit! Makes for a great round of intervals!

You have a specific definition of a Fit Yummy Mummy.

~She is filled with confidence – no matter what she wears or who she’s around, people notice her
~Her health and fitness are just as important as the care of her family
~She respects herself
~She is a positive role model for her children
~She fills her body with nourishing foods
~She schedules time to challenge her body with exercise
~She maintains a lean, fit active figure
~Her attitude is positive and filled with empowering words
~Her age is defined by the way she feels – inside and out

How did you develop this definition?

Based on my personal experience, as well as with the experiences of hundreds of my mommy clients, the common denominator is that these women not only want to look better, but to feel good about themselves again. A confident woman is one who shines from the inside out – this is true yummy-ness.

What equipment is required and how long are the workouts in your program Fit Yummy Mummy Lifestyle?

The Fit Yummy Mummy workouts require no more than 90 minutes a week and a set of dumbbells. Workouts include short burst resistance training and intervals. There are a variety of formats to choose from in order to fit the busiest of schedules.

How do you change a woman’s outlook about her weight?

An understanding of the fat loss process must first be explained. True results occur from a change in body composition – reduce the body fat, increase and maintain the lean muscle. During the first 4 to 6 weeks I highly recommend staying off the scale for the scale cannot determine the changes that are taking place inside. Instead, I encourage women to focus on the more immediate changes such as a dramatic increase in energy, reduction of cravings and a loss of inches.

Instead, the best way to measure physical progress is to track inches lost. This can be easily monitored by trying on your skinny jeans. Little by little, these jeans will fit. I also like to ask…”Do you want to weigh less or take up less space?”

We both agree that fad diets are terribly ineffective and rarely succeed over time. There are so many decisions to make when changing views on food. What is the most important thing you tell your clients about food?

When it comes to nutrition, before any changes can be made, current habits must first be identified. Therefore a food journal of some format must be used. From this point, it is all about making small changes. Of course there are a proven set of nutrition habits that get results, but trying to do it all at once can be overwhelming. That is why I break it down and help women tackle these changes one day at a time at a pace they are willing to live with.

Many women are also mislead by the idea that in order to weight less, they must eat less. This is just not true and not eating enough is the very reason why so many women fail to reach their goals. The key to revving up your metabolism actually lies in eating supportive foods more frequently. There is no deprivation and denial. Rather, living a fit lifestyle is a matter of balance and moderation.

Very insightful! I like the philosophy around eating. It ties in with my own beliefs that restricting calories is counterproductive and that it’s much more important to eat healthy, natural foods. I also believe that the goal is not to weight less, but to be lean and heavy with muscle. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Hi Hanlie, I love it: “I also believe that the goal is not to weigh less, but to be lean and heavy with muscle.” What a great mantra! I’m adding it to my list of affirmations. Thanks for the inspiration.

I use Holly’s program too and love it!

It works and I haven’t found it hard to do, in fact I am enjoying it and I feel great.

It is so true about the weight/muscle thing. I have weighed the same fit and looked great, or unfit and looked like a donut!

Great interview. I agree, Holly is amazing, not only in the knowledge that she shares with us, but as a human being, she shines.
