Housecleaning Workout Tip: Raking Leaves
By Cindy | October 14, 2007
With dropping temperatures and falling leaves, tis the season to rake leaves. For a mom, this is a fantastic activity to entertain the children and complete a household chore. What are the benefits of raking leaves?
- Dead leaves removed for a crisp, clear yard!
- Children have a blast when they play in the leaves. They burn off energy and have fun outside!
- You burn around 290 calories within an hour as noted by Thatsfit.com.
The Fall is my favorite time of year. The air is fresh and cool throughout the day. Here are a couple of hints to make the day an enjoyable event:
- As you rake up the leaves, create a small obstacle course for the kiddos to ride bikes or run through while you work.
- Make one big pile for the kids to jump and play in while you work the rest of the yard.
- Get small children’s rakes and let them “help” with their own piles. Make it a race to see who can fill their bags up first. Give your little ones brown grocery bags and you can use a larger version for yourself to make the competition “more fair.”
How have you made raking leaves with kids more fun? Do you remember things your parent’s did with you? Don’t forget to leave your suggestions in the comments. We can always use more ideas and tips!!

I don’t have any kids yet, but when I do I have a perfect yard for leaf piles…
When I was a kid we would make the leaf piles near the deck and then jump from there. With my current house, though, I have a bowl in my backyard that leads to the river, so I can just rake all of the leaves into the bowl and then let the kids take a flying leap over the edge.
Of course, the problem there is that I then have to haul all of the leaves back UP the bowl to get them over to the woods and out of the yard…
Problem? Sounds like a great strength training exercise combined with cardio!
