How I Found Time to Workout
By Cindy | July 6, 2007
My attempts to begin a regimented workout failed miserably. With children, I realized that my expectations to find a large block of uninterrupted time were futile.
Once I decided to shift my view of “a workout session,” I took advantage of the little moments in the day. A short, slow walk around the block with a toddler in tow. If the babies were really good, I could get them both in the stroller and get a good pace going for about fifteen minutes before they were clamouring to get out, walk around, and push their own strollers. Once a week, I join my MOMS group for a walk at the local greenways. Nap time became exercise video time. Mornings were off and on. I’m just not a morning person and with unpredictable baby and toddler sleep patterns, my snooze button received the best workout. My most successful commitment to fitness came when I joined the YMCA. With child care provided, I am now able to devote a full block of time to a workout.
I took two years to reemerge from my fitness slump. Being a new mom, I found excuses for avoiding working out. I’m too tired. I have so much to do around the house. In theory, I understand all the benefits of a consistent workout: more energy, better self image, and good health. In reality, I got bogged down in sleepless nights with baby feedings, and now, cleaning potty training messes.
There is no easy way to carve time out of the day. Children are demanding. Work and/or outside commitments take away time. When I made the promise to myself to make my workouts an important part of my day, I was able to reevaluate the “moments in the day.” I’m not always successful, but I stay focused on the big picture.
