Is The Safe and Smart Weight Loss Edge Gold Package a good fit for you? Book Review

By Cindy | February 10, 2008

The Safe and Smart Weight Loss Edge E-Book is for someone who is overwhelmed by the weight loss process. If you have little time to conduct searches on the internet, then Barbara Ling will save you hours of work with this great compilation of links for general weight loss information, diet plans, exercises, and many other related topics.

From a fitness blogger’s perspective, I plan to use it as a tool in my research. It’s price of $37.00 saves me hours of time that it would take to compile this list of over 900 links. I also look forward to incorporating her ideas into my own fitness journey. With vivid pictures and entertaining comparisons, her insights are accurate and informative.

This is not a pre-made plan that walks you through the process of losing weight with a structured diet and exercise regime. It is a book to show you what Barbara Ling did, a 43 year old mom with 4 children, and provide the tools to research what will work best for you.

Structure of the Book

  • Introduction Material: Barbara sets up the tone and importance of achieving a healthy lifestyle. By turning the process on “Project Me,” (9) she clearly focuses the journey on your perceptions, attitudes, actions and expectations.
  • Chapter 1: Preparing the Adventure covers the most important aspect of one’s lifestyle, the mind. I firmly believe that coming to terms with the mental battle is 80% of the reasons people become successful in achieving a healthy body. The affirmation that worked best for Barbara and one you should add to your list is “I can Do this” (13). Part of the challenge is being able to convince yourself that you are capable. Yes, it is a form of brainwashing, but what better message to tell yourself to achieve than a positive change in your life. Another important point she makes is the Me filter “Is this applicable to ME?” (15). This is essential when you research all the different diets and fitness plans available. Lastly, it is important that “you do NOT allow a scale to rule your emotions” (25) Barbara emphasizes what she discovered about the great value of inches.
  • Chapter 2: Tools You’ll Need touches on desire, motivation, journals and support. Barbara words the need for desire perfectly, “I’m telling you now that one reason why diets fail so often is because people intellectually say, ‘I want to lose weight…but emotionally have yet to turn the key in their mind that says, “Yes” I can and Will DO this!” (35) I call this a Mental Trigger and discuss it in my first newsletter edition. She also brings up very good points when those you love may not be happy with your newfound journey. The list of clever helpers such as sticky notes, chairs and shopping carts are mini-course correctors to keep you focused on your journey.
  • Chapter 3: Charting Your Path is the heart of Barbara’s internet researcher and writer skills. With clarity and simplicity, she teaches how to work the internet to build your support, search for information to build your program, and preventing yourself from being scammed, “when you internalize you’re in it for a long haul, you’ll be less susceptible to all of the quick fixes and scams that abound” (52).
  • Chapter 4: Create Your Plan The nine steps to “Create Your Own Path” are a foundation from which you can begin your journey, similar to how I’ve outlined 10 Babysteps to Mom’s Fitness Journey. Throw OUT Your Time Line, Internalize Success, Write Out A Commitment Promise, Write Down ICDT Everywhere, For Brave Souls, Join The Following Communities, Set up a Free FitDay Account, Based on Prior Research, Post Your Introductions, and Put Your Plan Into Action.
  • Chapter 5: Exercise, Smexercise emphasizes how to start out slow and explore the world of strength training and different activities. She reminds you to “gathering an appreciation of your previous life…how to witness the magic” (95) of who you are and the things you like to do.
  • Appendix A:Weight Loss/Diet Resources: A great resource to jump start your search for anything diet and exercise related.
  • Appendix B: How to Find Any Recipes Online: A quick tutorial to help build the recipe bank. We can all use more dishes to try!

The Extras

  • Clarity Marks are bookmarks for sites. With over 900 available, the links are all contained in one document. The download features provides you with the ability to import the links directly into your browser. If you need clear instructions for Internet Explorer, Opera, Mac Safar, or Firefox, Barbara makes the process easy. She explains everything. I suggest NOT importing all the files directly to your bookmarks. Simply use the favs document to access your links of interest. As you pick and choose the programs that work for you, the rest of the list becomes obsolete.
  • Bonuses:

1. “Do you have to be convinced to eat?” Leigh Peele touches on the essential reasons why you need to make sure you’re giving your body enough calories, not buy into the hype of what you hear, and facing fear!
2. “Q&A for the Fat Loss Troubleshoot Guide” Great questions are asked of Leigh which include weighing food, food choices, fat loss ( I love her response to the secret of Fat Loss—Cooking), her top 9 food picks, and more.

By illustrating how she developed her system to be fit, Barbara Ling empowers YOU to develop your system. She explains what motivated her and asks you questions to think about your own lifestyle. She personalizes the journey in a way that helps you understand how to incorporate fitness into your life.
