Music & Games
By Cindy | July 7, 2008
What’s a party without music? Throughout my fitness journey, I have kept a similar list of songs on my iPod. With the new year, I need some new tunes. What are your favorites?
My top five for running and lifting are:
- The Devil Went Down to Georgia, the Charlie Daniels Band
- Love Don’t Cost a Thing, Jennifer Lopez
- You Make Me Sick, Pink
- She Bangs, Rickie Martin
- Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American), Tobey Keith
My top five for being a Mommy:
- Let Them Be Little, Billy Dean
- You’re Gonna Miss This, Tracey Adkins
- My Little Girl, Tim McGraw
- Love Changes Everything, Andrew Lloyd Webber
- Long Long Journey, Enya
My top five for toddlers:
- Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
- The ABC Song (a savor during those breastfeeding days)
- Out on the Range
- Itsy, Bitsy Spider
- Hush Little Baby
Here a a quick game to play (with a bit of a workout, of course):
1. Sofa See Saw: Toddler on one end, You on the other. Stand tall and have toddler kneel down under the arm rest. When the toddler pops up, You squat down below the arm rest. Keep going. I bet the toddler’s going to out last you, but it’s fun trying to keep up.
2. Kissing Squats: Hold your toddler, keeping back straight, swing them low as you squat down. Always keep form to not hurt your back or knees (keep them behind your toes). Kiss your baby as you lift them up and stand.
3. Stability Ball Bounce: More for toddler giggles, Set them on top. Make sure you have a hold of them and let them bounce. It’s so much fun to watch them light up as they jump in the air.
Party Favor:
$15.00 iTunes Gift Card

I’m boring; I don’t listen to music very often, and never when I’m working out. I’ve even been known to put ear plugs in at the gym on occasion.
My favorite songs to sing to my boys are Hush Little Baby, Twinkle Twinkle, Old Mac Donald and ABC.
One of my favorite songs to hear when I’m walking is “Heaven’s Just a Sin Away” by The Kendalls-it has such a great beat. I also like to sing/hum “Brahm’s Lullaby” to my son as my favorite Mommy song & of course, he loves when I sing the “ABC’s” even though he’s not quite old enough to sing them with me yet.
I totally agree that music makes a huge difference when working out. I can’t run on the treadmill without my mp3 player! I love Toby Keith too, though I seem to have lost Red, White & Blue when we got our latest computer. I’ll have to see if I can find the backed up version somewhere now that you’ve reminded me. One of my favorite songs is Union Underground’s Across the Nation. It used to be (might still be?) the WWE Raw opening theme song. Another great song is The Future is in the Future by the Electric Six.
My kids love songs from their favorite shows, so I’ve learned most of them by heart. A good way to figure out the lyrics (because I can’t always make them out just by listening) is to turn on the closed captioning feature, which will give you the text on the screen.
My top 5 non-toddler-related songs that I absolutely have to have on any playlist for the treadmill or long stroller walks are (not in any particular order):
1 – Bobbin’ Bouncin’ – Grits
2 – Hick Chick [Dance Mix] – Cowboy Troy
3 – Bomshel Stomp – Bomshel
4 – Mississippi – Sugarland
5 – Proud – Heather Small (how can you NOT be inspired to do your best while listening to the theme song for The Biggest Loser?)
Top 5 songs that are even better because I’m John’s mom:
1 – Nothin’ But Cowboy Boots – Blue County
2 – Bubbly – Colbie Caillat
3 – Everything – Michael Buble (when I sing it to him I always change the line “And I can’t believe, that I’m your man” to “And I can’t believe you’re my little man”)
4 – Watching You – Rodney Atkins
5 – Never Alone – Jim Brickman featuring Lady Antebellum
Top 5 Songs to Sing/Dance To With John
1 – Sing – The Carpenters (and a Sesame Street classic!)
2 – Go Go Go – The Backyardigans
3 – ABC Gospel – Choo Choo Soul
4 – The Hairbrush Song – Veggie Tales
5 – Let’s Shake – Dan Zanes
My top cardio & strength training faves right now are:
Check Yes Juliet by We the Kings
Perfect Day by Cascada
Bleeding Love Leona Lewis
There’s Nothing Sean Kingston
Calabria 2007 Enur
Crazy Fun 3 am
Go Your Own Way Southside Crew
Love Like This Natasha Bedingfield
Feedback Janet Jackson
Ain’t Nothing Wrong with That Robert Randolph band
Shut UP & Drive Rihanna
Dancing with Myself The donnas
Rock this Party Bob Sinclair
I have a teenager and a preteen.. I’mnot listening to their music! LOL
I can’t listen to music when I run. I just zone in on my thoughts and my surroundings. But, with a toddler around the house? I try to listen to fun tunes to expose my little guy to all sorts of different music. I love the Really Rosie CD (it is from the 70s) by Carole King. I also listen to a program on our local radio station (www.exit977.org) called the Peanut Butter Jam. It is on Saturday mornings and it is adult music that kids like. It is great and my son loves it!
Thank you, Thank you. I’m gonna head to iTunes tomorrow and check these out!
When working out, I love listening to Kylie, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland
The reason I don’t listen to music when working out is that I’m technically illiterate! Even with an iPod, wouldn’t know how in the world to get it on there! I did used to listen to my Walkman when working out, I guess tells you how long it’s been since I left off!
I like to workout to hip hop or something with a definite beat so I can get into a good rhythm. Even though I don’t always agree with the lyrical content some songs I like to exercise to are…
Young Dro feat. T.I. – Shoulder Lean
Basement Jaxx – Where’s Your Head At
Bloc Party vs Fergie – Blocalicious Remix
Britney Spears – Gimme More.
I like to work out to “Everything Zen” by Bush, “Whip It” by Devo, anything by Aerosmith and “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” and “Early in the Morning” by the Gap Band.
We all like the Imagination Movers, but my daughter and i like to rock out to Ace of Base.
Great giveaway! Count me in. bebemiqui82(at)yahoo(dot)com
