Physical Fitness and It’s Components
By Cindy | July 19, 2007
Workout-at-home.com explains the different definitions on physical fitness by institutions and government agencies.
Physical Fitness as defined by Columbia University:
The ability to function efficiently and effectively, to enjoy leisure, to be healthy, to resist disease, and to cope with emergency situations. Health-related components of physical fitness include body-composition, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular endurance, and strength. Skill-related components include agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, and speed, The relative importance of each of the components varies for each sport. Physical fitness is not only sport specific, it may also be position specific.
I liked this definition because it incorporated the health and motor skill components within the definition. As moms, we are always challenging our motor skills with babies and toddlers in tow. We tend to neglect the health related components for which we have the most control over and have the greatest influence on our health.

As a mother myself I tend to go in swings when it comes to my fitness. After I gave birth, I had a detailed plan on how to loose the baby fat from the gym I went to and it melted within a period of 4 months (I gained 33lbs of baby fat). Since then (since my boy is 3), I’ve been waffling between going up and down 20lbs. I’m currently at 15lbs above my weight before I got pregnant. I sure can use a good home workout regimen for days that I can’t make it to the gym. Thanks for posting the link: I hope it helps my dilemma.
