Safety Tips for Moms Working Out
By Cindy | January 20, 2008
Working out is fundamentally about putting stress on the body. Muscles develop by the stress applied to them. Mental stress from outside forces does not enhance your workout. In the home, gym or on the road, steps and actions that address your safety are essential.
- Consult a Physician before making major changes to your fitness lifestyle.
- Be aware of your heart rate and physical limits. Have a partner nearby to help you lift weights that may be more than you’re capable of handling. If you feel dizzy or faint, then slow down and be prepared to call for assistance.
- Working out at home is a great alternative for stay-at-home and work-at-home moms. Because your only connection with adults is through your child, it’s important to teach your children when and how to use 911. Our children are capable of understanding grave situations. Here is a terrific example of a two year old dialing 911 when her mom collapsed. Teaching Your Child How To Use 911 goes into excellent detail to start training your child.
- When outdoors, be aware of your surroundings and listen to your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from the situation.
- Workout with a partner or bring along your dog. The extra body will put you more at ease and be a friendly companion.
- Workout during daylight hours in more populated areas. Many cities are creating Greenways and large park venues. Enjoy these features with comfort during heavier usage times.
- Wear reflective gear and light-colored clothing to be visible by vehicles when working out on the roads.
- Avoid high volume traffic areas due to the emissions and higher rate of vehicle exposure.
- When working out in extreme weather conditions(too cold/too hot), be aware of the limits of your body and the clothing you wear for protection.
- Keep a form of Identification on you at all times. Road ID is an excellent, inexpensive measure that speaks for you in the event you are rendered unconscious. It contains emergency contact information for anyone that helps you.

Safety is important. Preventative measures allow you to enjoy exercising in any environment. Getting outdoors and soaking in the sun is a great workout that should not be missed for fear of safety. What other suggestions do you have for staying safe in the home, at the gym or outdoors?
