Week 10: A Crazy Week, Mar. 2-8

By Cindy | March 11, 2008

clipboard.jpg We went from a 60/70 degree weekend to 3-4 inches of snow by Wednesday. I wish I could say that I actually got out and finished a nice long run on that 70 degree day, but I can’t. We hung out around the house, played outside and I created a design to landscape a front sitting area on paper. It was a pleasant, laid back weekend, but I had no idea what the rest of the week had in store. I guess that’s what I get for not paying attention to weather more than a day ahead of time.

Well, I’m pushing through the Half-Marathon Training even with a few (okay, maybe several) skipped runs. Here’s my reasons why. For the 5 mile runs that I’ve completed thus far, I’m feeling quite good. Even on my shorter runs, I’ve increased the intensity and realize at the end of the workout that I probably could have pushed myself further. Week 6 on the training is a slower/rest style of week, and since I haven’t been fully complete on the previous week’s training, I’m confident that I’ve given my body the rest it needs to face the next upswing in mileage. There isn’t a long run scheduled for Week 6, so I am going to complete the 6 mile run from Week 5.

Sunday: Gorgeous day hanging outside with the family and dreaming about gardening. I have my vegetable patch planned out and I’ve ordered my seeds. Thanks Linette for the great prize giveaway.

Monday: 10 minutes low cardio workout with some time dedicated to stretching. Full body strength training routine using a stability (also known as a Balance) ball and hand weights. If you’re up to the challenge, try doing tricep dips on a stability ball—Oh, my goodness, I knew that a soft, spongy surface could up a workout, but this one made me realize how powerful a stability ball can be!

Tuesday: 4 mile run on a treadmill. I increased intensity for 5 minutes spaced out over the span of the workout. I typically run at a 6.0 rate which equals a 10 minute mile. I increased the intensity to 7.2 which is about a 9 to 9:15 mile.

Wednesday: 10 minute light morning cardio. No excuses. Too shocked to find snow on the ground.

Thursday: 10 minutes light morning cardio. Strength training routine completed from a SparkPeople Video online. It was a 20 minute routine.

Friday: To kickoff the Ultimate Dance Party at 5MinutesForMom, I put together a dance routine playlist on YouTube. I danced for 40 minutes and attempted to figure out the steps of choreographed dances. It was rather pathetic, but Asher and Stephanie were quite happy to jump around mommy and be twirled. It has been a great party and is still running strong!

Saturday: Another day off with no good excuse.

What I really like about training just for fun is that I’m not too stressed about hitting every workout as scheduled. I try not to attach my self worth to missed sessions. Difficult sometimes, but I try to bounce back quickly. I kick myself because I do have lame excuses for not getting a workout in most days of the week. I do try to remember though that at this time last year, I was doing so much less for my physical well-being and I realize that this has been a fantastic year of progress! Keeping things in perspective is the key to moving forward, right?!

What a lovely blog you have, …my husband bought me a treadmill in January, having never used one before, I over-did it in the beginning and got burnt out. So, after taking a break for a couple of weeks, I’m back treading and am loving it!

I am working with the pre-programed workouts, but am interested in learning more about how to get the most out of it.

I’m off to explore your blog …BetsC

Thank you BetsC. Enjoy and let me know if there’s something you’re interested in learning more about.

Angela, we fell in love with the neighborhood. We liked that there weren’t many fences and the yards were a little more spacious than postage stamp lots.

It’s quiet and filled with a wide variety of generations.

I’m with ya, Felicia and Workout Mommy. I was not supper thrilled with the snow, but by the next day it had melted and was gone. So, it was a nice change of pace. Great picture moments that I would not have otherwise taken!

I just found the spark people exercises and I really enjoy them. We’ve spent a few days on landscaping and I’m planting a fresh herb garden. It just feels good to grow things.
