Week 18: 10K Training Begins, Nov. 4 - 10

By Cindy | November 14, 2007

In order to be ready for the Country Music City Half-Marathon, I am focusing on a 10K training program over the next few months. Online there are a great variety of plans set up for novice to advanced runners. I came across a plan that I know fits my lifestyle. I like variety in my routines. Hal Higdon’s 10 K Training Program provided me with a template that fits my need for mixing up routines. Strength Training and cross training is scheduled, and I don’t necessarily complete the week’s workouts in order. Here’s what I completed this week:

Sunday: I enjoyed a run around the neighborhood for 30 minutes. The distance was 2.89 miles. Running Map allowed me to determine the distance and elevation after the run. I explored the neighborhood for 30 minutes without worrying about my distance or a certain path. I like the freedom of just going. I also completed 30 minutes of weeding and gardening in the morning.

Monday: I participated in 45 minute Step Aerobics class at the YMCA. The choreography was fun and challenging. I felt great.

Tuesday: Rest

Wednesday: I completed a 2 mile run on the Greenways. I completed a strength training barbell routine at home to include overhead triceps, squats, lunges, calf raises, bicep curls and push ups. I completed 1 set of 12 for each exercise.

Thursday: Completed a 1 hour fast paced walk with a friend. We walked the Greenways and enjoyed catching on our families.

Friday: Pump It Up with the children. Our playtime workout consisted of jumping, climbing and chasing little ones around this great facility for children. We all had a blast. We spent two hours playing. I was sweating by the end of the get together.

Saturday: Nothing.

I didn’t complete a dedicated stretch routine and one strength training routine. My goal for next week is to complete all the strength training routines and incorporate a Yoga class into my day for a stretching routine.

That’s great! I need to find ways to switch it up. I totally get stuck in workout ruts…I need to work on that.

If I don’t have a basic outline for a few weeks at a time, I find myself not doing much to push myself. I like searching for workouts that are progressive, yet not so out there I give up. It’s fun to explore and see what you like. Have fun!!!
