Would a home gym get you to workout more?

By Cindy | January 25, 2008

My husband and I have often discussed that our dream home would include a gym basement. In Basement Becomes Ultimate Home Gym, the dreamer in me has redesigned our whole concept of what I’d like to see in our family gym. Wow! Check out the sauna and steam shower in the gallery. The article does contain great points on how to design and set up a home gym regardless of budget.

Of course, this got me to thinking, would a fancy gym really increase exercise and enforce a healthy lifestyle? Ultimately, the honeymoon period of all the neat gadgets and fancy equipment will fade. Will consistent dedication to being healthy and fit ensure the home gym isn’t left sitting underneath the main floors of the home? The excuse for inconvenience is no longer valid, but will another excuse emerge to justify one’s habits?

I am happy with our minimal investment of visiting the Y and working out with the little ones around the house (free). My biggest challenge has been the mental struggle to value my body and do the right things to make it healthy. Things are not going to change that struggle. However, with a price tag of $30,000 plus, I would hope that I’d not forget the wonderful investment just a few steps away from the kitchen and living room. What about you? Do you think a fancy home gym would change your lifestyle?

Well, actually I wouldn’t really go for the fancy home gym – I like speed walking and running outside, don’t really enjoy treadmills, and free weights and a couple of Pilates etc DVDs are all I need..would like to spend that money on ficing up OTHER stuff in the house though! :)

I think a home gym would be appropriate if exercise is already an established habit and part of your daily life. Installing one with a view to starting an exercise program won’t work!

Good question. Though I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the real struggle is to value your body enough. That seems to be a very common struggle, especially for us moms.

Hi Lidian, Ohh, the projects around the house! Yep, I can see lot’s of areas that could use the money. Kitchen?!

Hello Hanlie, I think you’re right. Once the habit is established and you’re always finding ways to workout, the home gym becomes a great addition.

Hi Bronwyn, Here, here! It’s a constant struggle.
